On happiness ...

So ... 2020 has got me thinking ...

There is so much going on right now that it's hard to absorb it all. Information is coming at us one meme or tweet at a time with no context, no perspective, just meant to evoke an emotion. Why do we love them? Because we all want to feel like we are part of a community (more on that later) and we post click-bait to get likes ...

Now why likes? Well for that you have to drill down into some basics - like what creates human happiness (or any creature with a brain really)? Chemicals! Yes, really. Stimuli cause the release of endorphins, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin in the brain that create a sense of happiness, wellness and belonging. As people (or animals) we are all seeking to find happiness. Moving from stimulus to stimulus to create a feeling.

Consider for a moment that brain development is complex - there are 7 billion people on the planet (consider the magnitude of that number for a second) and our brains are formed through a combination of nature and nurture to respond to stimulus with happiness chemicals - or cortisol, the stress chemical). What makes me feel happy may not be what makes you feel happy - and that's ok, as long as it does not interfere with another persons pursuit of happiness. We will get to the societal contract part of that another time.

Let me give you an example:

  • I love KFC. It tastes good to me and makes me happy.
  • "Person 2" doesn't like KFC because they don't like one of the spices in the coating (maybe it an allergy - I don't know)
  • "Person 3" likes KFC but chooses not to eat it because they have struggles with weight and self-image and eating it makes them feel guilty
  • "Person 4" is a competitive athlete who feels that KFC will hinder their performance so they only eat it in limited quantities in the off-season.

Know what - they're all right.

Know what - we need to consider there is another perspective before we bully and shame people into feeling and acting the same way we do.

This blog won't be fancy - that's not my intention. This blog wont sell you anything, that's not why its here. I am going to put my thoughts and reactions down on the page and hopefully they help someone else who is struggling to make sense of it all.

Stay safe and be kind to each other.
